This post has all of my recommendations for Maine! I’ve been there a bunch of times since I have a ton of family that lives up there, so these are all of the tips that I’ve gathered over the years. 🦞

Map
First, let’s get our bearings. 🤣 Here’s where Maine is on a map. It’s about a 2 hour drive from Boston to Portland, which is the largest populated city in Maine (~68,000).

Getting There
If you’re flying, the airport to fly into is the Portland Airport (PWM). You can check flights below.
Getting Around
No matter where you’re staying, I’d recommend having a car. There’s so much to explore, and to see it all you will need to drive around. You can check out car rentals here.
Where To Stay
Rent a House
When we go to Maine, we usually rent a house with Vrbo since it’s the entire family going. Some nice places to get a house are Kennebunkport, Ogunquit, and Sebago lake. There are a few hotels that I’ve heard are great, but I’ve never actually stayed there and I’ll list them below.
Cliff House
If you want the resort feel and if you want to explore Ogunquit and Kennebunkport, I’d recommend staying here.
Migis Lodge
This is a hotel on Sebago Lake, so if you want more of a lake style vacation, I’d recommend staying here. It’s also about a 40 minute drive to Portland, so it would be easy to do a day trip there.
Best Things To Do
1. Acadia National Park / Bar Harbor
Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor are about a 3 hour drive from Portland. It’s a beautiful place and should definitely be on the top of your list, especially in the fall! 🍁
2. Portland
Portland is one of the major cities, and it has a ton of shopping, breweries, bars, and restaurants. A fun thing to check out is the Portland Head Light, which is about a 20 minute drive from the downtown.
3. Kennebunkport
Kennebunkport is a great town on the coast. This is where you can find the good shopping, restaurants, and the beach! Be warned though, swimming anywhere in Maine is going to be COLD, even in the summer! 🥶
4. Ogunquit
Ogunquit is another nice town on the coast. One popular thing to know about here is the Marginal Way walking trail. It’s a trail that goes along the cost of Maine, and is a very nice walk.
5. Sebago Lake
If you prefer the lake scene over the ocean, Sebago Lake is a great spot.
Best Restaurants
First of all, DO NOT leave Maine without getting lobster, steamers, and clam chowder. That is just something you must do. 😄 I haven’t been to that many restaurants, but I’m going to share everything I know about where to go.

1. Scales
This is my favorite restaurant in Portland! Always hits.
2. Luke’s Lobster
Get ya lobstah roll here! Ok.. I’ll stop. 🤣
3. Allagash Brewery
This is a brewery about 20 minutes outside Portland. If you like beer and breweries, add this to your list!
